Moving has never been easy and it is especially difficult for people that are doing it for the first time. At first, things look very complicated and it is impossible to get an idea of what should be done next. But, as this scary project gets closer, people get more accustomed to it and have crafted a plan on what they should do. However, it gets even more complicated when someone has to move from one coast to another. For this kind of investment of time and effort, a person needs a very good plan.
However, there is no need to worry about this too much. Howzer Property Management says once you understand what you have to do and you get the hang of things, it will not matter to you whether you are moving one city away or going to the other side of the country. But, either way, to help those in this kind of situation, I decided to write this article to provide coast-to-coast moving tips for beginners.
Make sure to read through all of those steps to ensure that you create a proper plan and that you are truly ready.
1. Make a checklist
The first thing you will have to do before you make any kind of decision is to create a checklist. It is impossible to move anywhere without one. This little piece of paper (or typed down on your phone) will help you save a lot of time and will keep stress at bay. Trust me, this is something that most people have learned the hard way. Do not let yourself go down the hard way when you already know the solution.
This checklist needs to hold every tricky task that you have in mind. Everything from moving your kitchen, your living room furniture, your bed, and even your cars. Once everything is written down, the possibility that you might forget something will be much lower.
Make sure to check out the checklist at least several times a day to ensure that you have not forgotten about something that everything goes smoothly.
2. Do not do everything by yourself
One of the worst mistakes you can make while moving across the country is to try and do everything yourself. Sure, it might be possible, but it will take much longer than usual. But, this kind of project one just takes up too much of your time. It can be very stressful and may have a considerable impact on your state of mind.
So, instead of putting on so much weight on your back, I would recommend asking for help from your close friends and family members. I am sure some of them will be more than willing to assist you with this entire project to make things a lot easier for you.
If you are unable to find help from friends or family, your next best option is to hire professional movers.
3. Research the moving company
If you were unable to find friends or family members that are free to help you and if you have decided to hire professional services, you should be careful about which ones you pick.
There are so many different companies out there that provide moving services, it is difficult to choose which one is right for you. This is why I suggest that you do a little bit of research first before you make any kind of decision. Otherwise, you might end up with a company that costs a lot more while providing you with fewer benefits.
For example, such a service from one business may cost you several thousand dollars while another such as MoveEast.com might provide you with a much better price offer. With just a little bit of time and effort dedicated to picking the right company, you might save yourself a lot of money and save yourself from a lot of stress. I think the extra time spent is worth it.
4. Start inventorying
Since you are planning to move to the other side of this country, you should probably be careful about what you are going to take with you when what you are going to leave behind. Obviously, you can take everything which you, but that will cost you a lot more and can make it more difficult to unpack at your new home.
So, maybe it is time to give up on some items and pieces of furniture that you do not really need. Get a piece of paper and start writing down inventory. Write down every single item that you really need, the ones that you definitely do not need in the ones that will need to be considering.
In the oncoming days, I would suggest giving a glance or two at this list and maybe you will reconsider some things.
5. Decide how you are going to travel to your new home
Once everything is packed, ready, and sent to travel to the other coast, it is time to decide how you are going to get to your new home. Basically, you have a couple of choices. The safest and easiest way is to just grab cheap plane tickets with your family and get there in just a couple of hours. Unfortunately, plane tickets are not always cheap and if there are three or four of you, it might get expensive.
Another very good alternative is to drive yourself there. Since we are talking about coast-to-coast driving, it will take you around 45 hours. In other words, five or six days with eight hours of driving. I know, it sounds like a lot, but it might be the only way of getting your car to the other side of the country. If you have two cars then both of you will have to drive for 45 hours which will be a lot more than five or six days.
Or, you could try and ship your other car in a container. It is not that expensive.
After reading through this article, I am sure that you will feel confident to deal with this difficult project in your life.
